BCM212 Research Reflection

The Student Experience Of Satisfaction Within University Student Accommodation

Since the start of my BCM212 research project I have been fascinated with the student experience as a form of marketing approach for the university and how the marketing impacts individual student perceptions of university life.  However, through my research I discovered this was not going to be the main focus of my research topic. I begun with a survey focusing on a broad topic on ‘The Student Experience Of Satisfaction Within UOW Student Accommodation Sites’ and this lead down many rabbit holes, so to speak.

At first my presumptions were that friends, family and university advertisements played a major role in the student perceptions of life on campus. But I soon learnt this was only one aspect, and another, was American media. Specifically, movies and tv’s on the frat lifestyle within American colleges had a major influence on student’s expectations, ideals and presumptions of university accommodation living before becoming a resident. Hence a follow up short answer questionnaire that was more centered around expectations, realities and satisfaction levels of the UOW student accommodation experience. To reflect on previse survey questions and to gain new understandings.

I learnt through this BCM212 research how a researcher’s expectations can be disproven and I have therefore realised it is best to begin with an open mind and then to narrow in as more data is reviled. I enjoyed this process of discovering new perspectives and angles that I had not originally designed my research to undertake.

Until next time,

Millie
