AR Poster Design Analysis & Reflection

I wanted to publish the animation video (although in poor quality as it’s properties are set for a phone and not the frame size of YouTube) as it will assist in my analysis and reflection.

Analysis

At the start of my motion design animation I use a fade in transition created by the objects opacity. I start with the opacity keyframe on 0 and increase over a few seconds to 100% . At the time I thought this would assist my transition between scenes imbedded within my animation. However, I could have used better transitions that are fundamental to secondary motion, such as panning, zooming in and out, dallying. The animation needs more ‘camera’ motion as all the objects are always central, thus this creates a lack of movement and contrast.

On a another note, the manipulation and changes of the one object was an interesting element for the design of the animation that I tested. Rather then having multiple shapes and forms, I stuck to the one to see how far I could push it regarding animation from a design perspective. This to some extent was successful as I was able to create many different and interesting scenes through rotational movement and scaling. In addition, the patterns in the animation was essential to the aesthetic and design of the motion as it created a system focused on circular repetition.

I picked bright contrasting colours to enhance the playful and energetic tone that I was aiming for within the motion design. This was assisted dynamic nature the object portrayed through the everchanging scale, opacity, rotation and position in each section of the animation.

My temporal consideration was partial, I attempted to create a fast pasted animation to represent an energetic tone. However this created an issue as there was barley any time contrast, this could have been resolved if I had allowed for some slower moments between sections for the objects to break from the quickness- I think this may have made the motion more interesting.

Reflection

My first section of motion design derived from the idea of optical illusions, drawing on the legacy of optically created motion design. When the frame is frozen at particular times it seems that the entire composition is medium-made up dark and light blue circles due to the positioning of the curved edges in the light blue circle- the only circle shape present. I believe this to be effective, whist maintaining a contemporary element through the making of an AR poster.

In conclusion, I am overall happy with my motion animation and poster as it was experimental and I have learnt a lot about Adobe Aftereffects. However, it’s only up and onwards from here as I hope to improve on my skills, particularly with secondary motion. I hope to move away from geometric forms and to start testing illustration motion. It will be interesting to see how these fundamental design process apply to vector illustrations to create narrative style motions.

Until then,
